Senegalese Twists

Senegalese twists are made with synthetic hair fibers called Kanekalon and Toyokalon that can be purchased from any multicultural hair supply store.  Unlike human hair extensions, these synthetic fibers should cost $3-$4 a pack. Kanekalon fibers blend better with tightly coiled hair. If you have softer, wavy hair, Toyokalon may be a better option. Review the chart below to determine your hair texture type:

Kinky Twists

4-6 bags of the afro marley/afro kinky hair; can range in price from $4.99-$9.99 /bag depending on brand and quality of hair. Regardless, they should all say 100% Kanekalon fiber. This is the kind of fiber that will curl at the end when they’re rodded and dipped in hot water. If doing market braids (the big, long twists), you will need 10-12 bags depending on size of braids and brand of hair you get.

3. Getting Your Hair Ready

Shampoo and condition your hair like you normally would. Blow it out so it’s easy to comb through and easy to part. Please do not: 1) blow it out bone straight, 2) flat iron it, or 3) put a ton of oil/grease in it because that would make the hair too slippery–especially if your hair is already thin, fine, and/or you’re using human hair. Before I start braiding, I put a moisturizer in it to keep it soft and moisturized, and I also spray your scalp with oil sheen when I finish braiding.

2. How many packs of Hair do I need?

Small

4-6 bags of the $1.99-$2.49/bag Kanekalon fiber hair, or 3-4 bags of the Xpression brand hair. If using any other kind of synthetic hair, depending on the exact type of hair you are using, you would need 4-5 bags.

Medium

6-8 bags of the $1.99-$2.49/bag Kanekalon fiber hair, or 3-5 bags of the Xpression brand hair. If using any other kind of synthetic hair, depending on the exact type of hair you are using, you would need 5-6 bags.

Large

Large or jumbo box/individual braids: 8-10 bags of the $1.99-$2.49/bag Kanekalon fiber hair, or, 4-6 bags of the Xpression brand hair, which are $4.99-$5.99/ bag and are also 100% Kanekalon fiber. I recommend the Xpression brand (see image on the right) because they are longer, fuller, and require less trimming of those pesky stray strands along the length of the braid. If using the kind of synthetic hair (usually 100% Toyokalon fiber) where it’s only braided half-way down (i.e., braided about an inch past your natural hair and the ends are left loose), depending on the exact type of hair you are using, you would need 6-7 bags.
